This is how your menopause consultation works

Many women wonder what to expect at their first appointment. So that you know what to expect - and so that you can arrive relaxed.

Step 1 - Detailed medical history

At the first appointment, a detailed discussion is the first priority. Our doctors take the time to listen to your medical history, your cycle, your current symptoms and your life situation. No run-through system, no quick prescription - but a conversation that really starts with you. If possible, bring a brief overview of your previous medication and relevant previous illnesses with you.

Step 2 - Hormone diagnostics (IGeL service)

In the next step, if necessary, we determine your individual hormone status - including FSH, oestrogen and progesterone levels - and analyse which hormonal changes are behind your symptoms.

Step 3 - Individual therapy planning

Based on your symptoms, we work together to develop a treatment plan that suits your body and your life situation. Whether hormone therapy, bioidentical hormones, herbal preparations or a combination - we discuss all options transparently and without pressure.

Step 4 - Long-term support

The menopause is a phase of life, not a one-off event. At MVZ Dr Geisenhofer, we provide you with long-term support - with follow-up appointments to adjust your therapy.

Your treatment options in the menopause consultation

Bioidentical hormones - close to the body and individualised

Bioidentical hormones have a molecular structure that is identical to the body's own hormones. They are often obtained from plant sources - such as the yam root - and are considered a well-tolerated option in menopause treatment. At our MVZ Dr Geisenhofer, we will advise you in detail on bioidentical hormones: which preparations are suitable, in what form they are used and which risks need to be weighed up individually.

Conventional hormone therapy and hormone replacement therapy

Traditional hormone replacement therapy is an effective and well-researched treatment option for many women with severe menopausal symptoms. It is designed to alleviate hot flushes and sleep disorders, protect bones and thus improve quality of life. Whether and in what form hormone therapy is suitable for you depends on your medical history, your risk profile and your symptoms - we will clarify this together during your consultation.

Supplementary methods and lifestyle counselling

In addition to hormone therapy, there are other methods that can alleviate menopausal symptoms - as an alternative or as a supplement:

  • Phytohormones and herbal preparations (e.g. red clover, black cohosh, Siberian rhubarb)
  • Individual nutritional counselling to support the hormone balance
  • Targeted strength and endurance training for metabolism and bones
  • Relaxation techniques and stress management

Which combination makes sense for you depends on your individual situation - we will discuss this during the consultation.

Frequent menopausal symptoms - and what lies behind them

The menopause affects the entire body because the falling oestrogen and progesterone levels affect almost all organ systems. The most common complaints that women come to us at the MVZ are

  • Hot flushes and sweating - sudden waves of heat, often several times a day and especially at night
  • Sleep disorders and exhaustion - interrupted sleep that leads to chronic fatigue during the day
  • Mood swings and irritability - many patients report inner restlessness
  • Weight gain - despite unchanged diet, due to shifted fat distribution and falling basal metabolic rate
  • Vaginal dryness - more common than expected, rarely addressed openly - at MVZ Dr Geisenhofer you can also discuss this topic confidentially
  • Cycle disorders - often the first signs of the onset of perimenopause

Frequently asked questions about the menopause consultation in Munich

When does the menopause begin?

The perimenopause begins for most women between the ages of 45 and 55, and for some as early as 40 - as a process lasting several years. The actual menopause is determined retrospectively after twelve months without a period.

How do I know if my symptoms are caused by the menopause?

Not every sleep disorder and not every mood swing is automatically a menopausal symptom. Similar symptoms can also indicate thyroid problems, iron deficiency or other hormonal disorders. Targeted hormone diagnostics provide clarity - before therapy begins.

Do menopausal symptoms need to be treated?

No - but they don't have to be endured either. Whether and how to treat is an individual decision. At MVZ Dr Geisenhofer, we will show you the options and decide together.

What do I need to bring to the first appointment?

A brief overview of your current medication and relevant pre-existing conditions - we will discuss everything else together.

Do I have to take hormones immediately?

No. We discuss all the options together and decide what suits your situation.

How long does it take until I notice an improvement?

Many women report significant improvement after just a few weeks of hormone therapy - especially with hot flushes and sleep disorders.

Am I too young for the menopause?

The first changes can occur from the age of 40. A targeted blood test provides clarity.

Can I still get pregnant during the menopause?

As long as ovulation is still taking place, this is theoretically possible. Talk to us about contraception during the perimenopause.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

You can book your appointment directly and easily online via Doctolib - without having to wait on the phone.

When should you arrange a consultation?

Come to us at the MVZ if:

  • Hot flushes and sleep disorders affect your everyday life
  • Mood swings, irritability or exhaustion persist
  • Your periods become irregular or stop
  • you are unsure whether your symptoms are related to the menopause
  • you would like sound advice on bioidentical hormones or hormone therapy

The menopause is not a condition that you simply have to endure - with the right diagnosis and individually tailored treatment, symptoms can be significantly alleviated.
