Fertility counselling in Munich

Having a child is a great wish for many couples. However, sometimes it takes longer than hoped before a pregnancy occurs. If you have been trying to get pregnant for some time, we will be happy to advise you at our gynaecological practice at MVZ Dr Geisenhofer in Munich.

We take the time for a detailed discussion, clarify possible causes and discuss the next sensible steps with you. Our aim is to provide a well-founded initial assessment and empathetic support.

When should you seek fertility counselling?

If pregnancy does not occur despite regular, unprotected sexual intercourse over a longer period of time, a medical examination may be advisable.

For orientation:

  • after about 12 months in women under 35 years of age
  • after about 6 months in women over 35 years of age

Earlier clarification can also be useful if you have an irregular cycle, known hormonal disorders, endometriosis or after abdominal surgery.

First examinations in our MVZ

In our practice, we carry out basic diagnostics in the event of an unfulfilled desire to have children. This initial clarification often helps to narrow down possible causes.

Counselling and anamnesis

We start with a detailed consultation. We will discuss your medical history, your cycle, possible pre-existing conditions, previous pregnancies and lifestyle factors that may play a role.

Gynaecological examination and ultrasound

We assess the uterus and ovaries with a gynaecological examination and an ultrasound. This allows us to recognise any abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids or signs of endometriosis.

Hormone analysis

A blood test can provide indications of hormonal causes. For example, hormones that influence ovulation, the menstrual cycle or thyroid function are analysed.

Cycle monitoring

If necessary, we accompany a cycle with ultrasound examinations. This allows us to determine whether and when ovulation is taking place and whether egg maturation is proceeding normally.

Examination of the partner

Your partner may also have factors that make pregnancy difficult. A spermiogram is therefore often recommended. This involves analysing the quality and motility of the sperm. This examination is usually carried out by a urologist or in a specialised laboratory.

When we refer to a fertility centre

As a gynaecological practice, we can carry out basic diagnostics and initially advise you. If it becomes apparent that further examinations or special treatments are necessary, we will refer you to a specialised fertility centre.

A referral can be useful, for example:

  • if no pregnancy occurs for a longer period of time despite inconspicuous basic diagnostics
  • with significantly reduced sperm quality
  • for blocked fallopian tubes
  • for pronounced endometriosis
  • if hormonal stimulation or artificial insemination becomes necessary
  • if faster reproductive treatment is advisable due to age

What a fertility centre also offers

Fertility centres specialise in reproductive treatments. They have special laboratories and technical facilities that cannot be carried out in a gynaecological practice.

Hormonal stimulation

The maturation of egg cells is supported or stimulated with special medication. This treatment is carried out under close medical supervision.

Insemination

During insemination, processed sperm is introduced directly into the uterus at the optimum time to increase the chance of fertilisation.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF)

In IVF, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and brought together with sperm in the laboratory. The fertilised egg is then implanted into the uterus as an embryo.

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection)

In this method, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. This treatment is often used in cases of reduced sperm quality.

Our role in fertility care

As a gynaecological practice, we are often the first port of call for questions about the desire to have children. We carry out the basic diagnostics, advise you in detail and discuss the next steps with you.

If specialised treatment becomes necessary, we will refer you to a fertility centre.
