HyFoSy is a modern ultrasound procedure for checking the patency of the fallopian tubes. A special foam is inserted into the uterus via the cervix, which then flows through the fallopian tubes. Under ultrasound control, we can see in real time whether your fallopian tubes are clear - crucial information for your further fertility treatment.
Your advantages with HyFoSy at the Geisenhofer Klinik:
- No radiation exposure: pure ultrasound technology protects your body
- No contrast agents containing iodine: particularly suitable for allergies or thyroid disorders
- Outpatient and without anaesthetic: you can go home immediately after the examination
- Immediate results: Immediate discussion of the findings with our experts
Are you interested in the particularly gentle HyFoSy procedure with certified foam? Make your appointment now for this self-pay service and benefit from a compatible alternative without iodine-containing contrast agents - we will be happy to provide you with transparent information about the costs in advance.
Arrange a free initial consultationWhen is HyFoSy the right test for you?
We particularly recommend the HyFoSy examination if:
- you have been trying to get pregnant for more than a year
- An obstruction or blockage of the fallopian tubes is suspected
- you had a previous illness such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease
- You are looking for a radiation-free alternative to tubal patency testing
This method of checking the fallopian tubes gives us important information on whether the connection between the ovary and the uterine cavity is functioning and whether natural conception is possible. The patency of the fallopian tubes is an essential prerequisite for the egg to find its way through the fallopian tubes after ovulation and meet sperm in this way.
How the treatment works with us
Preparation:
Ideally, we perform hysterosalpingo-foam sonography in the first half of your cycle, shortly after your menstruation. This way we can be sure that there is no pregnancy and that the uterine lining can be optimally assessed.
Procedure of the treatment:
The procedure is carried out in a relaxed, calm atmosphere: you lie comfortably, as you would during a gynaecological check-up. We will explain each step to you before we carry it out so that you feel safe.
We gently insert a very thin, soft catheter into the uterine cavity via the vagina and cervix - it is so thin that most women barely feel it. A special, body-friendly foam is then gently inserted.
Under ultrasound guidance, you can watch live on the screen as the foam flows through your uterus and fallopian tubes into the abdominal cavity - many women find it reassuring to see the examination in real time and understand what is happening.
The whole process only takes a few minutes, and you can ask questions or ask for a short break at any time during the process.
After the treatment:
Immediately afterwards, we will discuss the results with you in detail. You will find out immediately how clear your fallopian tubes are and what the next steps are for your desire to have children.
Possible findings and their significance:
- Both fallopian tubes are patent: The conditions for a natural pregnancy are met. We will discuss with you which other factors could influence your fertility.
- A blocked fallopian tube: Natural fertilisation is also possible with a blocked fallopian tube. We analyse the causes and advise you on the options.
- Both fallopian tubes blocked: We will explain the possible causes such as adhesions following inflammation, endometriosis or previous interventions. We will discuss the next steps together.
- Unclear findings: Sometimes there are constrictions or disorders in the area of the fimbriae. We will discuss whether tubal lavage or other treatment methods are advisable.
Common causes of tubal patency disorders:
- Previous infections or inflammation in the abdomen
- Endometriosis with adhesions in the area of the fallopian tubes
- Adhesions after abdominal surgery
- Scarring after an ectopic pregnancy
- Congenital features of the fallopian tubes
Frequently asked questions about the HyFoSy process
What exactly does HyFoSy mean?
HyFoSy stands for Hysterosalpingo-Foam-Sonography. It is an ultrasound procedure in which a special foam is passed through the uterus and fallopian tubes to check their patency. The examination is carried out without X-rays and without contrast agents containing iodine.
Is the HyFoSy examination painful?
Most patients find the examination less stressful. There may be a slight pulling sensation in the lower abdomen, similar to menstrual cramps. If necessary, you can take a mild painkiller beforehand.
How long does the HyFoSy examination take?
The actual examination only takes a few minutes. Together with the preparation, performance and subsequent discussion, you should allow around 30 to 40 minutes.
When is the best time for HyFoSy in the cycle?
Ideally, we carry out the examination between the 6th and 12th day of your cycle, i.e. shortly after the end of your period. At this point, the lining of the uterus is thin and pregnancy can be safely ruled out.
Do I need to prepare for the hysterosalpingo-foam sonography?
No special preparation is required. However, you should be sure that you are not pregnant. We recommend that you bring a bandage with you on the day of the examination, as slight post-operative bleeding may occur.
What happens if my fallopian tubes are blocked?
If the examination shows that one or both fallopian tubes are blocked, we will discuss the next steps together. Depending on the findings, further examinations may be useful. Restricted tubal patency does not mean the end of your desire to have children - there are various treatment options.
Does health insurance cover the costs of hysterosalpingo-foam sonography?
The HyFoSy procedure (hysterosalpingo-foam sonography) is a self-payer service and is not usually covered by statutory health insurance. The examination with the certified foam is used in fertility treatment and offers you a particularly gentle alternative to tubal patency testing. We will be happy to inform you about the exact costs at our practice in Munich and provide you with a transparent cost estimate. If you have any questions about the assumption of costs by private health insurance companies, we will support you with the necessary documents.
Can I go straight to work after the HyFoSy examination?
Most patients can resume their normal activities after the examination. Some women prefer to take it easy for the rest of the day. Listen to your body and, if in doubt, plan some rest time.
How quickly will I receive the results?
You will receive the results immediately after the examination. We will discuss the findings with you in detail and answer all your questions. You will leave our practice with a clear picture of your situation.
Are there any risks or side effects with HyFoSy?
HyFoSy is a very safe procedure. Slight spotting or a pulling sensation in the lower abdomen may occur, but this usually subsides quickly. The risk of infection is very low. Serious complications are extremely rare.
When should HyFoSy not be used?
HyFoSy should not be carried out in the case of acute infections in the genital area, during pregnancy or in the case of acute inflammation. We also postpone the examination in the case of very heavy menstrual bleeding. We will clarify all of this with you in advance.
Can HyFoSy improve fertility?
Some studies suggest that the examination itself may have a positive effect on fertility, possibly by slightly „flushing“ the fallopian tubes. However, this is a possible side effect - the main purpose remains diagnostics.
