Do you still have questions?
There is a lot to think about when it comes to birth registration, delivery and the first steps after the birth. We have compiled the most frequently asked questions for you here - from registering at the MVZ to the birth certificate at the Munich registry office.
How does a birth registration work?
You make an appointment at MVZ Dr Geisenhofer - ideally between the 20th and 25th week of pregnancy. At the appointment, your medical history and ultrasound will be taken, the birth process will be discussed and any unanswered questions about the delivery and mode of labour will be clarified. We will then register you for the birth at the Geisenhofer Clinic.
When should you register your birth?
As early as possible - maternity clinics can only attend a limited number of births. Early registration secures your place. An appointment with us between the 20th and 25th week of pregnancy is ideal.
What do you take with you to the birth registration?
Please bring your maternity pass and your insurance card with you to your appointment at the MVZ.
Which doctor is responsible for the delivery?
This depends on how you would like to give birth. If you give birth with a hospital doctor, the specialists at the Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic will take care of you. If you give birth with an attending doctor, your registered gynaecologist will attend the birth in person. In both cases, midwives are present at all times.
Which doctors work in the delivery room?
In the delivery room at the Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic, experienced obstetrics specialists work together with a well-coordinated delivery room team of midwives. They accompany mothers through all stages of labour - from the opening phase, in which the cervix and uterus dilate, to the expulsion phase, in which the baby is born. Your personal gynaecologist is also present during a delivery with an attending doctor.
Is the Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic a private clinic - and how much does the delivery cost?
The Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic is a private clinic - but treats both privately and legally insured patients. When does the birth have to be registered at the registry office?
The birth of a child in Munich must be registered within one week at the relevant registry office. In the case of a hospital birth, the facility usually forwards the birth notification - parents do not have to take care of this themselves. After notarisation, the registry office automatically forwards the data to the residents' registration office.
Who registers the newborn at the residents' registration office?
Parents do not have to do this themselves. The registry office automatically transmits the child's details to the residents' registration office after notarisation. In the case of a hospital birth, the birth notification is also forwarded directly to the birth office.
How long does the birth certificate take in Munich?
The processing time at the Munich birth office is currently around four weeks. The birth certificate can be collected from the registry office five to ten days after the birth at the earliest or sent by post on request. A copy from the register of births can also be requested from the registry office.
What do I need to register my newborn?
The following documents are required to register the birth at the registry office:
- Valid identity cards or passports of both parents
- For married parents: marriage certificate and birth certificates of both parents
- For unmarried parents: Birth certificate of the mother and, if applicable, proof of paternity acknowledgement
- Foreign-language documents: in the original and with a certified German translation
The mere notification of birth is free of charge. The deadline for choosing the child's name is one month if the name has not yet been decided at birth.
