It is usually a one-off consultation designed to provide you with guidance and reassurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"gb-text button-cta\" href=\"\/en\/contact\/\">Make an appointment<\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text\">Identical or fraternal twins \u2014 why it makes a difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all twin pregnancies are the same. Around 70 per cent of all twin pregnancies are fraternal: two eggs have been fertilised, and each baby has a <strong>its own placenta and amniotic sac<\/strong>. In the case of identical twins, who arise from the division of a single fertilised egg, the situation is more medically complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">70 per cent of identical twins share a g<strong>shared placenta<\/strong> (monochorionic pregnancy). In rare cases \u2013 around one per cent \u2013 they even share a single amniotic sac. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During our consultation, we will look at your specific situation and discuss what this means for your healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text\">Prenatal care for multiple pregnancies \u2014 what to expect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A multiple pregnancy is medically classified as a high-risk pregnancy. This sounds more worrying than it needs to be: it simply means that closer monitoring is necessary and advisable. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/geisenhofer-mvz.de\/en\/antenatal-care\/\">Pregnancy care<\/a> Regular ultrasound scans are an integral part of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\"><strong>For orientation:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preventative check-ups for twins take place every two weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the 28th week of pregnancy onwards, weekly check-ups are recommended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identical twins sharing a placenta require even more frequent monitoring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In addition to ultrasound, Doppler sonography is also an important diagnostic tool in cases of multiple pregnancies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 10 in every 1,000 pregnancies in Germany are twin pregnancies. The duration of pregnancy <strong>is on average 37 to 38 weeks for multiple births<\/strong>, which is why early and well-organised support makes all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"gb-text button-cta\" href=\"\/en\/contact\/\">Make an appointment<\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text\">Giving birth to twins \u2014 what can we discuss together?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birth planning is a concern for many expectant mothers who are carrying twins. What are the options? What factors come into play? During our consultation, we\u2019ll explain the different scenarios to you and outline the medical factors \u2013 such as the babies\u2019 position, the placenta\u2019s position or the course of the pregnancy \u2013 that influence the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are transparent: the MVZ is an outpatient gynaecology practice. For inpatient deliveries, we work closely with the hospital directly opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/geisenhoferklinik.de\/zentren\/geburtshilfe\/\">Women's Clinic Dr Geisenhofer<\/a> which assists with around 2,000 births each year and has its own obstetrics department. What you can expect from a consultation with us: thorough information and preparation, so that you know which options and next steps are realistic for your situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/geisenhofer-mvz.de\/en\/birth-registration\/\">Birth registration<\/a> You can make arrangements for your stay at the clinic directly through us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text\">Support throughout a twin pregnancy \u2014 what you need to know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\"><strong>Maternity leave and the ban on employment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of twin births, the maternity leave period is extended: mothers of twins are entitled to a total of 18 weeks\u2019 maternity leave. Maternity leave begins eight weeks before the estimated due date and, following the birth, is extended by four weeks compared with a single birth. In justified cases, the ban on working may begin earlier; your gynaecologist will issue you with the relevant medical certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">E<strong>Parental allowance, parental leave and financial support<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents of twins can take parental leave separately for each child. From the second child onwards, a supplement of 300 euros is added to the parental allowance. In Bavaria, there is also a multiple-birth allowance, which parents can apply for at their local youth welfare office. To cope with everyday life after the birth, parents of twins should organise support at an early stage, for example by arranging a domestic helper, which can be applied for through their health insurance provider under certain conditions. Please feel free to speak to us about this; we\u2019ll advise you on the most important next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\"><strong>Find a midwife early on<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women expecting twins should arrange to see an experienced midwife as early as possible, as demand is high and places are limited. As a rule, the hospital stay following a twin birth is slightly longer than after a single birth.
